Tickets remain for Sunday’s ‘Mountain Stage’ at the CAC featuring John Oates

The University Arts Series rings in the New Year with Mountain Stage this Sunday, Jan. 14, at the WVU Creative Arts Center. The show, which gets underway at 7 p.m., will include performances by John Oates, of Hall & Oates fame; Tyminski; Lilly Hiatt; Danny Barnes and Bil Lepp. Tickets, starting at $27, are on sale now at the Mountainlair and CAC box offices, online at Ticketmaster.com, and by phone at 304-293-SHOW (7469) and 800-745-3000.

Hall & Oates has recorded 21 albums, selling more than 80 million units. The duo has 10 No. 1 records, more than 20 Top 40 hits and have toured the world. “Maneater,” “Kiss On My List,” “Private Eyes,” and many more of Hall & Oates’ hits are rock classics. Since embarking on his solo career in 1999, John Oates has recorded five solo albums. His latest, “Arkansas,” is due for release next year. The album, originally inspired by the music and legacy of the legendary Mississippi John Hurt, grew to include other artists and styles that represent the dawn of American popular music.

“This is the record I have always wanted to make … with the band to bring it to life,” says Oates of “Arkansas.” “After all these years I feel I’ve finally been able to capture the sound that’s been in my head.”

Tyminski (Dan Tyminski) is a 14-time Grammy Award-winner and one of the premier vocalists in modern acoustic music. He is also a 25-year member of Alison Krauss’ band Union Station and the singing voice of George Clooney’s character in the film “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” for which he won two of his Grammys – Best Country Collaboration with Vocals (“I am a Man of Constant Sorrow”) and Album of the Year (the film’s soundtrack). EDM (electronic dance music) fans know Tyminski from his vocals on Avicii’s international pop hit “Hey Brother.” NPR calls Tyminski’s “Southern Gothic” a country-EDM album with many of its tracks bringing forth the “broody, imagery-driven portraiture of hidden desire, religious guilt and unsteady conscience.”

Lilly Hiatt is a fixture of Nashville’s indie scene with a knack for rootsy sounds and smart, unpretentious songs. Hiatt is the daughter of John Hiatt, one of America’s leading songwriters. Her third album “Trinity Lane” was recently named to Rolling Stone’s list of the 40 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2017. “Trinity Lane” is an album of personal truths; a collection of songs that take stock of where Hiatt has been, where she’s going and the challenges she’s weathered to get there. Rolling Stone calls Hiatt a rocker with a way of finding the just-right lyrical detail.

Danny Barnes is a banjo-playing innovator who’s earned high praise from everybody from Bill Frisell and Dave Mathews to Steve Martin. Martin presented Barnes with the 2015 Prize for Excellence in Banjo in 2015. Barnes came up as a member of the groundbreaking Austin band The Bad Livers and has since enjoyed a two-decade solo career experimenting with electronic music, jazz, old-time string band music and more. 

Bil Lepp is a storyteller, author and recording artist whose works have received awards and recognition from The Parents’ Choice Foundation, The National Parenting Publications Association and the Public Library Association. Lepp is a five-time champion of the West Virginia Liars’ Contest. His outrageous, humorous tall tales and witty stories have earned him the appreciation of listeners of all ages and from all walks of life.

Mountain Stage with Larry Groce is produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting. The live radio show is taped for air on more than 200 National Public Radio stations across America. 

Tickets for the Jan. 14 show at the at the Creative Arts Center start at $27 for the general public. All tickets are $10 for WVU Students.
