Arguably the most successful crossover artist in Latin music history, Gloria
Estefan's music transcended conventional pop barriers. Gloria Estefan and
the Miami Sound Machine produced singles that placed on the pop, dance,
Black, adult contemporary and Latin charts.
Her 1990 concert at the WVU Coliseum was highly anticipated. The show was originally scheduled for December 1989 but had to postponed when Estefan suffered a bleeding vocal chord as was forced to cancel performances to rest. When she and the Miami Sound Machine finally took the stage March 17, 1990, they were greeted by 7,500 fans. On tour to promote their album, "Cuts Both Ways," which produced the hit singles, "Get on Your Feet," "Cuts Both Ways" and "Oye Mi Canto," fans were treated to a two-hour show full of energy and marked by Estefan's three costume changes. The near-capacity crowd also enjoyed a medley of Estefan's top love songs that included "Here We Are," "I Can't Stay Away From You" and "Words Get in the Way." Estefan described the medley as one for "anyone who has ever been in lust," according to the Clarksburg "Exponent-Telegram." The final song of her set was "The Rhythm is Going to Get You," but the adoring crown coaxed here into an encore by chanting for her return. She rewarded their efforts with a performance of "Get on Your Feet." Estefan's tour was cut short after she suffered a broken vertebra when her bus was involved in an accident on a snow-covered highway in the Pocono Mountains just three days after the show at the Coliseum. |

"The Sound Machine was well oiled and pumping, switching gears with
Latino-based dance tracks and baby powder ballads." –
