America performed at the WVU Coliseum in October 1979 after the WVU vs. the
University of Kentucky football game where the Mountaineers snapped a 7-year
Homecoming losing streak by defeating the Wildcats 10-6. The show
was the first official Homecoming concert held in four years and ticket
sales reflected overwhelming student approval. The show drew 8,500
fans with its average ticket price of $5.
The band played some of their soft sounds, "Daisy Jane" and "I Need You," to open the show and saved the hard rockers for the end, according to the 1980 Monticola. They also played a few songs from their current album at the time – "Silent Letter." Not surprisingly, one of the crowd favorites proved to be America's first No. 1 hit, "Horse With no Name." |
