About the Show
Akon's multi-platinum debut Trouble was his ode to redemption, having served time for car theft before his music career took off, and his hit single “Locked Up” earned him street credibility. His sophomore album, 2006's Konvicted picks up at his rebirth. Akon's mission is to reinvent himself through his salvation—music.
“Akon's strength,” says The Associated Press, “(is) delivering hard-hitting street portraits with an R&B singer's depth of emotion but with a rapper's level of credibility.”
Konvicted balances streetwise swagger, studio originality and common sense to create a very honest release. With hits like “Sorry ... Blame it on Me,” “Smack That” (with Eminem), and “I Want to Love You” (with Snoop Dogg), Akon is quickly establishing himself a hip-hop hit. His work tops the Billboard charts, iTunes, and MySpace. Additional hits include “We Takin Over” (with T.I., Fat Joe, Lil Wayne and others), “Soul Survivor” (with Young Jeezy) and “The Sweet Escape” (with Gwen Stefani).
Working in the tradition of pioneer R. Kelly, Akon moves deftly from hard-knock stories to the dance floor to inspirational ballads. His verses are full of nimble sing-rapping with Akon multi-tracking his voice to sing his own back-up vocals.
